(Another) Kokoda Trail Question

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of carrying my own pack on the Kokoda Trail and would like to hear from anyone who has done this before. Is it as difficult as the tour companies make it out to be? I am in reasonably good shape, having run marathons and stuff, but would like to know how others have fared.

Thanks!

I carried my own pack for the length of the trek and I have never run a marathon. In fact kudos if you can. Personally I think you should be fine. Do some multi day walks with it beforehand (if you haven't already) to get used to it, otherwise you could get a bit stiff and sore. Personally I think the trekking companies want you to use a porter because .. <drum roll> .. they get more money from it! When I did it the guide we used told us porters get only 400kina (about Au$170) for carrying a heavy pack for over a week, yet you have to pay $400 for the same porter. A large administrative difference if you ask me.

I wrote a story about my little independent adventure walking the Kokoda if you are interested, here. It may be useful, or not. Cheers.

Jules, I live in Chicago so I may have trouble getting the DVD, but thanks for the reply anyway.

Nomad, your account of the Trail was just what I was looking for. I really enjoyed the photos and writing, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of your blog. I lived in Port Moresby for 15 years and am going back this summer; your tales bring back lots of memories.
Thanks heaps!
