| netay12:17 UTC31 May 2014 | Hi everyone,
My friend and I are planning to go to png this July. We are trying to understand how much would a month in png will cost us, as said, we are backpackers who are willing and actually even prefer living in the villages, cooking for our selfs and all needed to travel chip.
We do want to go trekking, scuba diving and experience the culture. Can you help us?
Thanks
Neta

A major factor is flying - if you want to see many parts of the country in one month, you will have to take flights, which are very expensive. If you stick to areas where you can travel by PMVs and boats, your budget could be much lower.
Being ready to stay in villages will certainly help reduce costs (but do always offer your hosts a little money for your keep!) but on the other hand, diving is an expensive activity, and often makes it necessary to stay at expensive dive resorts.
Having said all that, a realistic minimum these days may be around $40-50 per person, but with flying and diving, you could easily spend a lot more.
If you can“t afford that, consider neighboring Indonesian/West Papua instead of PNG.
While still pricey by Indonesian standards, it is much cheaper than PNG.
