Bali to East Timor and PNG?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello there,
I've just been invited to a wedding in Bali. It is during the six week school summer holiday, so I would have some time to travel round. I would love to visit East Timor and PNG while I was there. I was just wondering how easy (and costly) that was going to be?
Thanks
David

Both can be visited, but both require visas and both require flights to get to from Bali (unless you have LOTS of time) so won't come cheap.
PNG visa in particular can be hard to get in Indo so try arranging it from home in advance.

david, not sure where you are based, but the east timor option is very simple from bali, merpati fly mid mornings to dili and return mid afternoon.....batavia air in january started the same route in competition, but now have dropped back to only 2 flights p/w.....you are looking at around 130usd one way.the png option is difficult as nothing connects direct from timor leste to port moresby.......you would have to fly airnorth from dili to darwin.....then to cairns or brisbane.....and then onto pom.....expensive!!!!and time consuming.to see most of east timor give yourself 20 days.

Hello there,
Thanks for the replies. I thought it would be costly and difficult to get to PNG but decided it was worth asking incase there was a way! I'm glad it seems fairly easy (and cheap) to get to East Timor.

Note that both countries ONLY offer visa on arrival if arriving by air.
So those planning to enter them overland from Indonesia, by flying more cheaply to neighboring West Timor and West Papua and then crossing the land border, must get their visas in advance.

I know this post is old, but just to help people in the future:
According to the LP of Indonesia (9th edition 2010) you can get a East Timor visa at the border!
I might be doing this cross my self in this coming April, so if i do, i will return to this post and update.
