bank or ATM before immigration at Port Moresby airport

Hi

This Saturday I'm flying to Rabaul from Cairns with Air Niugini with a stop in Port Moresby, however as it is a through flight, I won't need to go through immigration. What I'm wondering is if there is a bank (that would be open on a Sat) where I can exchange money, an bureau de change or an ATM in the arrivals area or in the domestic terminal as I know there aren't any at Rabaul airport and I'll need money from the get-go. I've looked into exchanging money here in Melbourne but the exchange rate is terrible (PGK1.7 to AUD1 instead of PGK2.06) so I'm assuming I will be better off exchanging in PNG.

Hi @sezmac, sorry I'm a little late replying, but Port Moresby airport doesn't have a lot of amenities. There is an ATM (often out of order) land side in the domestic airport, as well as a bureau de change in the international airport. From memory, there is very little airside, apart from a loo and two sandwich shops at the domestic airport, and the international terminal has undergone a lot of upgrades in the last couple of months, so not sure what they put in place airside.

Where do you get the best rate to change (e.g. £ cash) in Port Moresby? Do you get as good a rate at the airport as downtown? Do you normally change at a bank or with a money changer? Is the rate uniform around the country or is it noticeably better in the capital. Thanks.

I would say the airport or good hotels would provide the best rate. Unfortunately I didn't change any money myself, so can't say or sure.

I can't imagine a 'good' hotel would offer a favourable rate.

only place to change GBP is at POM airport - otherwise its AUD or USD at banks in POM or big cities

dont try and buy PGK outside of PNG

best rate is from an ATM
