Beaches and Family Visits in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

We've got family (older parents) coming to visit us in PNG, and we'd like to take them away out of Moresby for a trip of about 5 days. We haven't had the chance to travel much around the country, so don't really know where to try...

We're looking for (ideally):
-One destination (i.e. we'd like to fly just to one destination from Moresby)
-Beaches that you can safely and happily swim at (not huge waves, good sand)
-Hotel not too far from beaches, and that is considered 'safe'
-At least one day trip to surrounding areas, by boat or driving (hiking won't work very well)
-A place where our folks could just relax at if they're tired (for example, by a pool) but that might offer a good diving option for the day while we let them rest

We've seen some amazing images from New Ireland, but where would you recommend to stay? KaVieng? If so, Plantation, Treehouse or other? I'm also happy to look into Madang, etc....just really don't know what to expect, and we don't have time to visit to 'scout out' any destinations before they arrive (in March).

Could anyone suggest a place to stay on the coasts or islands where it wasn't just the beaches and natural environment, but the people, and maybe some of the cultural highlights (i.e. day trips) that really made their trip?

Thanks for any suggestions!

hello,i have noticed your qs?with no answers on the limits you have placed on travel/,png is a difficult country to find exactly what you are searching for!kavieng is an option....also look into the tufi resort/wewak is also an interesting option ,as you get white sands....and day trips out to the islands, with easy access by air new guinea daily.see my travel story at www.donstravelstories.blogspot.com.................i would suggest for safety you stay at "in wewak boutique hotel"and plan your days from there.good luck.

Thanks Don -- What we're looking for is more like a wishlist, but you're right -- i'm guessing that list is limiting replies. We'll look more into Kavieng as well as Tufi. At this stage, it really depends what flights we can get :)
Will also check out your blog -- thanks for the reply.

Hi,

Nusa Island Resort or Lissenung Island in Kavieng would sound like it fits your bill. Diving, snorkelling, safe, kayaks, villages to explore, and down the coast you have Dalum community Guesthouse (the best in PNG) for an overnight stay away from electricity. Last time I saw the Treehouse it was pretty run down. Sad. Tufi is also good for a one location stop.

I live in Madang so if you are thinking there, let me know and I can give some hints and tips

Thanks for the tips; will make use of them for future trips.
We've actually just gotten back from Kokopo plantation, near Rabual. Our family really enjoyed seeing the volcano, the observatory, and a day in the Duke of York islands, but the resort itself was a very mixed bag. The rooms were great, and so was the food. Service was really on/off though, as was the management. The beach was brutally dirty, but the pool was amazing. I'll have to write up a proper review.
