bizarre PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

hi, it would be interesting to hear what the most bizarre or interesting experience people had while visiting PNG?
and what are the absolute must see things in PNG?
especially things off the beaten track.

The most "interesting" was to come across a hunter who had just killed a tree kangaroo with a stone - maybe regrettable because they are endangered but interesting because his people have been doing it this way for hundreds of years. I would also recommend the big cultural shows that occur each year, thousands of peole attend but only a few hundred expats and tourists, so hardly on the beaten track (not usre anywhere in PNG is..). And remember when you are in PNG some of your ways are what is bizzare..

Talking of locals killing things, a certainly unique experience for me was climbing mt wilhelm in the pre dawn by moon light and our guide took off and leapt into the undergrowth to capture a baby cuscus (like a possum). It was very cute, but didn't like being held by its tail and certainly didn't like my stick being using to whack it on its head. He ate it later for lunch, and we were offered a leg .. and accepted .. tastes like lamb.

Apart from that, climbing Tavavur, an active volcano .. also a bit of a stupid thing to do when it started throwing out car size rocks.

(if you want to read some stories about PNG, including the above two, have a look at my old blog from my two years there and then see the favourite stories listed on the right hand side).

And I would concur with seeing a singsing, they truly are amazing.
