Boats/Ferries from Alotau

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are heading to PNG in a few weeks and are flying out to Alotau after we arrive. A friend of ours said that a couple of years ago when he was travelling in Alotau, he was able to catch a boat/ferry out to visit some islands and made it to Madang. Does anyone know if boats or ferries like this are still operating and if there is a 'timetable' of sorts available?

Thanks.

As far as I know the regular ferry has stopped and whilst you may be able to catch a dinghy between small villages they do not run to a timetable and you certainly would not get all the way to Madang on just one dinghy. Fuel is very expensive. There are so many things you can do from Alotau. A dinghy trip to Samarai or even Kwato would be achievable even just for a day trip.

The best place to start for Milne Bay would be http://www.pngtourism.org.pg/map/milne-bay-province/ - if you are thinking of walking take a look at this walk from Alotau to Wamira (Dogura) -- http://www.michie.net/pnginfo/wamira.html

Do a search for Ulumani Treetops Resort.
