Border crossing from PNG into West Papua Indonesia

Hi there,

I'm proposing on doing a border crossing from West Papua into PNG and I hold an Oz passport.

If anyone has recently done this recently come from PNG into West Papua Indonesia can they advise if the area was safe to travel. Im ultimately making my way to Port Moresby.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I did it last december coming from wewak by road, wewak/ataipe/vanimo/jayapura easy from vanimo to jayapura(pmv),and a little more dificult to find vehicule on the other part, it's safe the only problem some drivers are drunk and it sometimes it's dangerous(high speed)

public transport from Wewak to Ataipe then from Ataipe to Vanimo

I did it last september. We've been lucky and have a free transport to the border. From the border take pmv to Vanimo. There is no road from Vanimo to Wewak. First take a small boat to Aitape and from there a public bus to Wewak. Recently there is a small airplane company - Travel Air, who flies between Vanimo, Wewak, Lae and PM 4/week
