Bulldog Track

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I am planning to trek the Bulldog track from Hidden Valley to Tekadu. Does somebody know if it is very difficult or exhausting to do it? I read about some log-bridges across the rivers and I would like to know more about them, especially the ""precarious high log bridge" between Anandea and Tekadu described by Richard Stanaway in his website.

My husband & I were Peace Corps Volunteers in Kakoro (Tekadu was our "sister" village-the flights from Wau did the circut between the 2 villages & back & there was a bush research camp built with our sponsor agency's help in the middle of the 2 villages). Anyhow, we walked the part between Kakoro & Tekadu, so can't comment on the portion you are heading for, however always were with folks from our village. Took us about 8 hrs & we did cross larger rivers where you had to carry items on your head to stay dry & bushwack through the track in parts even though it was a fairly regularly traveled track between our two villages. We had log bridges within our village that the locals walked over (barefoot) like they were walking down the road, but that we were alot slower & more cautious about.

Anyhow, some of the Tekadu people may remember us (Mark & Terrie the Peace Corps who lived in Kakoro) & should you get there, do send our "bigpela hellos!!"

Suggest you check out the Morobe Tourism Bureau website www.tourismmorobe.org.pg they can give you some up to date info on the track and people to contact. A lot of work is being done with the local villages to improve and develop the track.
Good luck, you will have a great time.
