As in LP guide I have checked out the great resourse of Richard Stanaway regarding this track found at http://richard.stanaway.net/bulldog.htm just wondering if anyone here has done the trek or knows if the track is still walkable or if it has fallen to the Jungle since Richards trip in 2001.
I haven't done it, and will be surprised to hear if any TTer has. | 1
Yeah I just ordered a copy of it this week used from Amazon for $5... figured the trekking info is the least likely to change since it was published in '93. Glad to hear it will be a worthwhile purchase | 2
The Bushwalking in PNG '93 edition is a great source of info. I regularly refer to it, even now. (I have dreams of tackling the Black Cat track still - I will get there and do it - I even have the topo maps for the area). As to the Bulldog track, a local guy i used to work with rode a bike with a group of other local cycle group rode from Lae to Port Moresby over the track, although they mostly carried their bikes along what what was left of the track. Obviously walking this track would be a serious challenge and not something to take lightly, but with right planning it would be possible. | 3
Thanks for the info! I am thinking that this will likely end up being more a dream than reality for this my first trip to PNG... slightly limited timeframe has me thinking I will have to forego the possibility for this time around in favor of doing the more accessible treks like Mt. Wilhelm and possibly there down to Madang... sooo many things to do in PNG! | 4
Hi | 5 | |
The notes as produced by Richard have changed some what due to development in the area. Where Richard talks about going to Hidden Valley camp is no longer possible and the alternate route is from Wau - a short drive to Winima and then on the Kudjeru track to the bulldog track. The Kudjeru track was used as an alternate supply line when they first built it. The track is still passable but can not be entered from Edie Creek to the north. | 6
