i would highly reccomend anyone visiting PNG (or indeed anywhere) watches 'cannibal tours' a documentary about a tour trip to the sepik made by dennis o'rourke

Interesting. I worked for 2 or 3 years in Solomon Islands with an Australian who could not be convinced that bargaining was not acceptable, and holding hands with his wife while walking through a village was offensive. He was tolerated because of his wife's qualifications and skill.

LOL Ozzie, it's amazing how quickly some of us can become so accustomed to custom out there. I remember being absolutely shocked, while riding in the back of a truck from Malu'u to Auki, to see a young couple also on the truck holding hands, touching knees, etc., something in our culture that is perfectly normal and acceptable. They were Islanders but I don't think they were Malaitan ...

I'll be going to SI with 3 women frm Australia n a few weeks. One has been there once before, and one has extensive experience in PNG. It will be interesting to see how they manage. (We won't be going anywhere remotely interesting, though.)
