Cost of living in Port MoresbyCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Hi everyone, I am considering applying for a volunteer position in Port Moresby that would provide about $200 (Australian) per week as a living allowance. The employer would cover accommodation. Can someone who is familiar with the cost of living in Port Moresby let me know if this allowance would be sufficient to cover a modest lifestyle, with occasional indulgences such as nice dinners? Would I have any money left over for travel? Thanks for your help.
It would be a bit tight.. but you should manage ok. They may not be much left over for travel but most vols I know usually get sent on trips by their employers anyway. Visiting a village of one of your local colleagues would probably be pretty cheap. When I arrived here 10yrs ago as a volunteer I was on A$200 a month! I was living in a more remote area so I ended up saving money... Ahhh, those were the days..... | 1
I haven't spent much time in POM, however I imagine it is the same as other spots in PNG. Whats cheap is local produce brought at the markets - really cheap, if your prepared to get into the local produce - eating can be quite cheap. Meats and the western foods are quite expensive in supermarkets and usually not great quality. Eating in restraunts, drinking at bars etc can be quite pricey if you what to do it on a regular basis. However I find that the vols usually create a pretty good network of dinner and drinks in peoples houses, it's cheaper and more safe as mostly nights generally are unsafe. Th main expense in traveling in PNG is flights - internal flights are extremely dear, however PMV's are relatively cheap if there is a road system from point a to b. Hope this is of some help. | 2
