Crocodiles in Morobe Province?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

We want to trekk from the mountain range down to the coast without a guide. Are crocodiles a major threat in that area? Up to which altitude might we meet the dangerous ones? Is there something like a rule which rivers are safe to cross?

Thanks!!

There are crocs in the labu lakes (spelling?) near the mouth of the Markham River. But it depends on where you want to go trekking. I wouldn't advise against trekking without at least a local guide. Besides it is a good way for a local boy to make a bit of cash, in cash poor areas. Negoiate a rate before you set off though.

Whether there are crocs isn't a big deal; if you have a local guide they will know where to cross and how to keep you safe. Having done trekking in remote areas I think it would be STUPID to do it without a local guide (unless you are yourself a local guide). One time i cut my foot with an axe and if i didn't have someone else there i might have died. Bush trails in PNG, for the most part, are very rough and i think you would probably get lost. A good wage in PNG is 4 kina per hour. I found many people are eager to guide me and look out after me. People in PNG are more often interested in forming a relationship with you than how much money they are making. You might form a meaningful friendship with your guide. I recommend buying a bush knife and a plastic canvas for your party.
