Domestic flights

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello!

I'm going solo to PNG end of June. wondering about 2 things:

  1. I heard that if you entering PNG with "Air Niugini", you get a discount for domestic flights while you there, after looking and looking didn't found any more information about how can I claim it...anybody know?

  2. After election time, is it safe to go to the highlands?, should I wait a couple of weeks until things calm down? or is my guess is good as anyone guess?

Cheers!

You can consult here (some of?) the info provided about that discount in the web of Air Niugini (BTW, I don't know if it'll be updated). It doesn't say how to book it so I would get in touch with Air Niugini to get updated info (about the discount and about how to book a flight with that discount).

Last in 2006 I bought from Air Niugini sales agent in Honiara,Solomons (Guadalcanal Travel Services) a ticket from Honiara to Moresby return and next day a domestic sector to Rabaul. I got 20% discount for the flight to Rabaul.
When I wanted to buy afterwards additional domestic sectors with 20% discount at their Rabaul office, this got refused.

Send a mail to Audrey Takila, who worked for Air Niugini, when there was an own Air Nuigini office in Honiara. This office was closed about 10 years ago and Guadalcanal Travel Service took over als Air Niugini sales agent, Audrey moved than to Guadalcanal Travel Servive. guadtravel (at) solomon.com.sb

Maybe you can get 20% discount on domestic sectors if you buy from a major Air Niugini office/sales agent most likely only outside PNG domestic sectors together with an flight arrangement in and out of PNG. That means the domestic flights are fixed date.

my understanding,is that if your travel agent is good and you book at least 2 domestic flights with air n.g along with your international flights you can receive around 25 per cent discount?i constantly get this discount as i usually have 4 internal flights,,,there are many offers air n.g have available.....
as for highlands/elections......my reports from the southern highlands this year say it is very "orderly"at this stage, compared to previous elections......this can change tommorow!!!

the heavy presence of army/police is already in place......
it is always unpredictable.....as eleksion days get closer,
often gets more volatile after the polling!when results are released.

2. After election time, is it safe to go to the highlands?

In any case its not 100% safe to travel in Highlands, IMHO.

Thank you for your tips!

Would you say it will be cheaper to buy domestic tickets on-line or will it be better to buy them in a travel agency in Port Moresby?

i would suggest you pre book domestic flights before you arrive,as png revolves around air transport,a lot of internal flights are full and often overbooked!!!!many tears fall at airports, and make sure you are at domestic check ins nice and early,,,,,it can be chaotic!!!
