Eastern and Western highlands.

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I want to retrace some old steps. Is it practical to hire a self drive vehicle and travel Kainantu, Okapa, Minj and Banz? Please only respond if you have current knowledge of these areas. My main concern is not road conditions, it is security. Thanks in advance.

i think you are taking a big risk driving by yourself in the highlands - i would not do it and would not recommend it
you need a driver with their own 4 wheel drive vehicle - probably also a drivers mate who can guard the vehicle at night

security conditions across the highlands have been deteriorating since the election and the earthquake

From what I can work out the going rate to charter a private 4WD Toyota troop carrier with driver is about 700 kina a day or 400 kina for half a day. This will come with fuel, driver and "crew member" (person who changes the tyres). The vehicle will be old and in not very good condition but might be a better option than hiring a car yourself. i would just turn up and ask around. Mondo drives from Madang to Kegsugal on this basis. Other operators include Pym from Mt Hagen and Kumul Lodge in Enga Province. See my trip report for details. Sorry dont have info about specific places you want to visit. I suspect drivers will tend to only travel in areas where they have relatives or contacts.
