Hi all, I'm heading to PNG soon, mainly to do Kokoda. I will have a couple of days at the end in Port Moresby. I'm currently booked into Loloata, but am thinking of using couchsurfing. There's a woman in Port Moresby who lives in Gerehu - does anyone know where that is and whether staying there for a couple of days will make it difficult to get around? Thanks! Helga
Gerehu is an outer lying suburb of Port Moresby past Waigani and the University of PNG. There are regular Public Motor Vehicles (PMV) from Gerehu to other suburbs but are you prepared to travel on a PMV? PMV's usually only operate during daylight hours. Stage 1 and 2 are the most easily accessible parts of Gerehu. Stage 3,4 and 5 may be harder to get to. Taxi's are available and although they are all supposed to have meters to work out the fare that is not always the case. Deadlines for fitting meters have come and gone. In my opinion unless you have access to a private vehicle it would be difficult for a "stranger" to get around safely on PMV's to Gerehu. Even locals, especialy women, sometimes get into trouble travelling around the National Capital. If it was me I would get someone who I trusted to drive me to Gerehu and back and not rely on PMV's and / or taxis. cheers | 1
