Getting a PNG tourist visa in Kuala LumpurCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Hello, Today I picked up my Papua New Guinea tourist visa at the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and would just like to update anyone who’s interested in doing the same. The whole process was very quick and easy. We went to the High Commission before 12:30 with all the documents required and went back the next (today) to pick up our passports with the visa label. This is what they asked for:
Evidence of funds is only requested when they deem it necessary. I asked the lady at the counter if we needed to provide evidence and she said no. I guess we got lucky! The fee for a 60-day tourist visa is RM100 (around 32.00 USD). A document with the visa requirements states that the visa processing time is five working days. When we lodged our application at the High Commission the lady said that we were the first Mexicans ever to apply for a PNG visa in Kuala Lumpur, so they might take longer to approve our visa. What a surprise it was to see an email the next day telling us that we could pick up our passports that very same day. It only took 1 day. I don’t know if that’s usual, but they told us that the High Commission would be closed tomorrow (Friday), so maybe that’s why they processed it faster; it also helped that we can apply for a visa on arrival to Indonesia (our next destination) and that Mexico is an eligible nation to get the PNG visa on arrival. It is also worth saying that we are planning to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Jayapura in Papua, Indonesia. We bought our flights with anticipation and were a bit worried that the High Commission might not accept our application because we aren’t going to fly directly into Papua New Guinea, but cross overland from Indonesia. We explained this to the embassy staff and they said there was no problem, we only needed our flights from KL to Jayapura and a letter explaining our plans to cross from Indonesia into PNG. Note: the letter was to be computer written and printed in black and white. I think that pretty much sums it up. We are very excited about going to PNG and are proud to have our visas ready! Sounds like an easy way to get a visa. Easier than faffing about in Jayapura possibly. Out of interest how are you getting from KL to Jayapura? Air Asia to Makassar and then Makassar to Jayapura via an Indonesian airline? Often been wondering what the cheapest and quickest way to do this would be. | 1
Hi Kyle, Yes, the cheapest way we could find was flying with AirAsia from KL to Makassar (we will spend a few days on this island and visit Toraja) and then from Makassar to Jayapura with Sriwijaya Air. The last flight is way more expensive considering the distance. | 2
Dani_Steph, seems u were very lucky. Already before arriving had cold but picked up a fever, googled the address and it was mapped already on google maps -- WRONG location, WRONG address (gov;t website doesn;t come up easily in search results and i located other websites with conflicting addresses) ... walking around, asking people on street, i was in a tired and rather frustrated mood Lady : insisted it would be 3 days or longer and i would need to leave my passport Lady: boss needs to see passport Me: he can see it now, you can photocopy id pages, all pages, of this passport, older passport, can see i've traveled many countries, etc etc ... but i'd like my passport so i can get other visa's, or if hotel asks abt it, or any reason Process/system just plain frustrating ... and i don;t trust that the visa will be ready in 3 days , especially as we never go onto the topic of "onward/return ticket" and yet the consulate officer just kept re-terating the 3-days and these are the rules, makes me think they will want onward return tickets . Brings back memories of embassies of other countries that have been frustrating | 3
Hi Expatriate_LP, I guess we did get lucky! i totally forgot to leave the coordinates the first time I started this thread. For anyone who is planning to visit the embassy in the future, you can just copy and paste these coordinates on google maps: 3.151464,101.733719 to find the correct address. There is another thing I would like to say. I have been applying for several visas throughout Asia for the last 11 months and I have never been able to keep my passport during the days it takes to process the visa. I guess it's just the way it is. What I normally do is keep a copy of my passport at all times just in case. | 4
