Getting a VISA for land border crossing in advance?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello!

We're planning a trip for December, and I'd like to cross from Jayapura in Indonesian Papua into Vanimo in Papua New Guinea, via the land border.

As far as I can tell, it's not possible to get a VISA-on-arrival for the land border. I've heard that it's possible to get a VISA in Jayapura, however the embassy is only open 4 days a week and could take up to 5 days (!!!) to process. Our timing dictates that we'd be arriving in Jayapura a few days before Christmas so I'm also worried about potential closures during that time.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a tourist VISA for Papua New Guinea ahead of time? I live in west-coast Canada and apparently the only Papuan embassy is on the other side of the continent in DC in the USA. Obviously not something I could stop by to visit.

Thanks for any help!

You should get the visa in advance.
The PNG consulate in Jayapura can be difficult to deal with even at the best of times, and I am sure they will take a leasurely break around Christmas and New Year.

I would love to get one in advance, but I'm also asking if anyone knows how to do so :P

As far as I can gather, it isn't possible.

Everything is possible but the :P put me off discussing it further.

I was in the same situation as you last year. I crossed into PNG from Jayapura and got my visa in advance. I also live in a country (Russia) without a PNG Embassy. You have to apply directly to the PNG Immigration direct by email. About a week later your visa will be ready to collect at the Australian Embassy in Canada.
