Guide options for the Sepik River

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi!

My wife and I are looking to go to the Sepik River next March. We are a bit shocked by the prices that some guides are asking us (around 300$/day/pers.).

Is there a way of finding directly a guide when we reach Wewak or Angoram? Would it be cheaper? Is it going to be easy?

If you have any other idea, how to visit the Sepik river without breaking the bank, we would be grateful! Thanks!

Hi Vinni4

There is a man by the name of James Gawi. He is from Angoram in the Sepik. He does the Sepik cruise by using his brothers motorize canoe. Try contact him on mobile: 675 72689654.
Yes, fuel/jumum cost is usually high for FIT travellers but try contact James in case he might lower the prices. Prior to doing the sepik the motorize owner must have the fuel/jum ready. Once you make the prior arrangment he can come and pick you up in Wewak and drive you down to Pagwi for river cruise.

Thanks

Chris

I ended up doing the Sepik on about $100 per day back in September. I would contact Francis Tobias
Francistobias211@gmail.com (73662894) in Angoram. Francis is very plugged into the area and can get you in contact with tour guides all over Sepik. He also has a guesthouse in Angoram. He was a one-stop shop for me. If he knows that you are price conscious, he should be able to help you out, either in Angoram or Wewak.
