Guidebook for PNG?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I've read the reviews on the LP PNG guidebooks and it sounds like the 2006 version is lousy: not budget-traveler targeted, and missing lots of important info. I also read a review that the 2008 version is much better. Would folks recommend that as my main guidebook for PNG? Or are there other publishers that I should consult?
I am all for finding non-listed accommodations etc but still need a good start for my planning, info to get an idea on how to get around, maps for key places, info on visas and logistics, etc.
Any advice is welcome!
Adam

The Lonely Planet is unfortunately the only guide book on PNG. They even smugly say so on the back cover. The 2008 version sucks. Steal one or buy it second hand just so that LP doesn't get cash for crap advice.

The 2008 edition is much better than the previous one, but that is not saying much.

As noted above, LP is the only publisher to cover PNG.
If you want more detailed (though dated) info on the country than there is in their latest guide, get the last decent edition they produced, in 1999, I think, in addition the the newer book. It has about twice as much detail. Their even older Bushwalking in PNG guide (2nd edition!) is also excellent.
