hammock or tent while trekkingCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
I am planning on going to New Guinea to trek either the Kokoda or Black Cat. I am also planning to travel around the country a bit. I really don't feel like lugging around a heavy tent but know I may need to be camping some on the trails. Hennesy and Clark make some nice jungle hammocks that are light and packable. Is a hammock a good idea or would a small freestanding tent be better. One of the main issues I have is security. While asleep my pack would prob be hanging on the line outside the hammock while in a tent I would be able to fit it in a vestible. Will the bag be secure hanging out? Does anyone have any experience with jungle hammocks and have suggestions about brands?
I've just come back from trekking in PNG - and we lugged a tent around with us and didn't use it once. My advice would be to order some really good ordnance survey maps of the area you plan to trek. If villages are pretty close to one another then you most likely will be offered a hut to stay in in each of the villages. So you won't need a tent at all. If that's the case then bring a hammock just as a back up plan. Security should not be an issue if you have a guide with you. Just be smart and make sure you keep your money belt with you. Luck you! wish I could go back. | 1
