Hang out place for a month in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hey people,

we want to ask if there is maybe a place which you could recommend in Papua New Guinea for a kind of little bit longer break in our travel. We are looking for a place to hang out for a month or two. Best would be somewhere on higher altitude with some trekking options around. Do you know a place which may be interesting / exciting enough to stay there for some time?

Best of luck,

Ben

Maprik region was pretty gorgeous to me... I'm not referring to the coastal area of Wewak though... up the hills. over Dreikikir area... vanilla country.

Thanks Sirdan,

well what did you like about the region?

And, as I think it is on low altitude, does anyone maybe know a place on an altitude of perhaps approximate or more than 2000 meters where it might be nice to hang out for some time?

You could try budget guesthouses near Tari or in Chimbu (see the PNG link in my signo line).
But I can't help feeling that the PNG Highlands are just not laid-back enough to spend a month exploring in one place - mostly due to security concerns.
Fascinating, interesting, spectacular, yes - relaxing, I don't really think so.

As much as I love PNG, I think the highlands of West Papua would be a cheaper and safer place to hang out for a month.

If I wanted to hang/chill out in PNG, I'd head for the islands.

I would also recommend Tari as a place to hang out. Try the Warili Guesthouse. I stayed there in Septemebr last year and put a trip report on TT. You could go bird watching, bush walking, do a walking tour through villages etc, but a month might be hard to fill in.

Other places would be the islands. There is a really nice guesthouse at Bol on New Ireland and then an hour down the road there is another at Dalom. These palces are relatively cheap to stay and are nice and clean with excellent hosts. However there is actually not much to do but kick back and chill - maybe that is what you are looking for.

Another place i would recommend is Kabaira Beach Hideaway in East New Britain. It is on the other side of the island from Rabaul / Kokopo and is a really nice guesthouse. It targets divers, but there are lots of things you can do using Kaibaira as a base. there is a good reef right in front of the guest house and you could take a boat trip over to the Baining Mountains. Or just kick back in the nice gardens.

My suggestion would be to spend maybe a week in Tari and then go between New Ireland and East New Britain. I posted a trip report on my travels in New Irelaoind and staying at Kabaira - check that out. Post what you end up doing and good luck.

Hi guys,

thanks for the really helpful advice! Some things seem to be difficult to find out about a place where hardly any tourists go, also using google you only get a very few helpful links. So thanks even more.

It will take some time until we get there, we are still in Laos, and will try to get there via Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia overland / overwater.

Another question, as some people who seem to know about PNG have been reading this: Is it possible to get a visa extension and stay longer in PNG without leaving the country? Or is it possible to get a tourist visa longer than 60 days on beforehand?

Thanks again!

hi cyclers,i agree with laszlo, the highlands is a great experiance but is volatile,my suggestion is try mt wilhelm(png highest peak)then trek across the top into madang on coast, there is a reasonable track that links mt wilhelm to bundi in madang province,a great spot to stay is bettys lodge at the base of mt wilhelm, from madang trek north to the sepik region and vanimo, across the border into west papua and up to wamena in highlands of west papua.should take about 6 weeks.go for it

Try the Wau Ecology Institute.google them...It might work...homesteader

Bogia Guest House I would suggest the Bogia Guest House in Madang Province. We've stayed there and it was pretty cool with the option of snorkeling/diving/trekking

Cheers
