Hiking food

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Are hiking foods like, tinned ham/ powdered milk/ custard powder or any other dehydrated foods easily found in Port Moresby or any other main P.N.G City markets?

If they are available, ive heard that everything is really expensive in Port Moresby and P.N.G, so would it be cheaper/easier(strict customs?) to bring these items with us into the country?

Cheers.

All these foods are readily available in supermarkets in the larger towns. You will also be able to get powered milk and Ox and Palm bully beef in trade stores thoughtout the country. These are staples of the PNG diet, so are reasonable priced as they are sold in bulk.

Dehydrated hiking meals (Back Country brand) are availbe from the Brian Bell store in Boroko, a suburb of PNG. They are about twice the price you pay in Australia, so if you especially want them you could bring them from Australia. I've not had any problems at customs bringing them in.

You can also buy the instant rice and pasta meals in supermarkets in the larger towns. I have no trouble in finding reasonably priced food to take hiking with me, but I always stock up in Port Moresby.

Yeh i dont mind the tinned ham.
Maybe in a couple of years ill be able to head out hiking with nothing but a Rambo knife and flint stone, but for now i still carry my tinned ham.
Thanks for the tips northmelbournedn.

As Poster No 1 has mentioned the locals favourite brand of tinned beef is Ox and Palm. They also eat large hard biscuits in various flavours such as Chicken and Bacon. Biscuit is spelled Biskit in Tok Pisin. They also like tinned fish in chilli sauce. These items can be found in trade stores and supermarkets.

Green vegetables and fruit are often sold on the side of the road.
