Hotel room rate in Port Moresby

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I've just this last week emailed a few hotels in POM to get prices for their rooms (I asked for night of 31st August for one person). Thought I'd share these for anyone who may be interested...

Lutheran guesthouse - tried this email address but seems to be invalid - luthtranshouse@daltron.com.pg
* I emailed Paiya tours who does the bookings for the Lutheran guesthouse in Mt Hagen to see if they had an email address. They replied saying "I do not know the email address of Lutheran guesthouse in Port Moresby but you could contact Kunipi Pim
(my brother) who runs a guesthouse in Port Moresby - for information and booking. His email address is kunipi@finance.gov.pg"

You can check the prices of the more expensive hotels online so I did not email them (also way beyond my budget).

Cheers
Carolyn

For those who may look at this thread in weeks and months to come, inflation rates in Port Moresby are in the double digits and hotel rates increase astronomically. The more expensive hotels are currently over 800 Kina per night for a single room. Ela Beach will do reduced rates at the weekend, but rates shoot back up during the week. 9 months ago the expensive hotels were about 580 Kina per night. It's projected that the demand for these rooms will continue for a least another year. The extractive industry companies are building expat staff housing like crazy, so eventually the demand for these rooms will decline and the prices should adjust.

The US dollar has dropped against the Kina every month in recent months, making PNG ever more expensive for those traveling with US bucks.

Thanks for this very useful and updated information!
Last week, I tried email the Comfort Inn on the adress you have given here. I am aware that things are slow, but I haven't heard from them yet. Can you please confirm whether the address is correct and/or whether the hotel as any alternative email adresses. Thank you.

Further to this post; Comfort Inn rarely seem to check their emails, and Shady Rest Hotel has never replied. Once when I actually got a reply from Comfort Inn, the rates were still the same as posted above. I guess it's better to call them if you wish to make a booking.

Got a quick and friendly reply from the Hideaway and they quickly reserved a room; seems to get good reviews; airport transfer and breakfast are (apparently) free. I'll be there mid-Oct. after hiking down from Keglsugl to Braham Mission. The price they quoted me for a simple single sure beats the price of the Airways, Gateway, Holiday Inn, etc.

I agree - the response from Comfort Inn was not that great. I had chosen them to stay at and had to email a few times to get a reply, which I did eventually. Perhaps calling them would be better. When making this booking I was on holiday and expecting to pay for myself (hence looking for a budget place). I had however organised to do a day's work in POM on my way out of the country and was then fortunate enough that the company I was working for decided to pay for me to stay at the Crowne Plaza for the night. I wasn't going to say no after sleeping on a matress on the floor for the previous week up the Sepik. So I can't report back on the Comfort Inn although can say that they were accomodating when I cancelled with them at the last minute.

Thanks for the informaton...

I'm sure some of us would like to hear about your Sepik trip (CarolynH)...who your guide was, what was your itinerary and what were the costs? Any chance of a little trip report or maybe you could PM me?

Thanks,
Karen

Just a little bit of additonal info:

I have just stayed two nights at the Ponderosa Family Hotel and I found this a decent option. Standard rooms are 235 kina, and they also have "executive" rooms for 375 (I think). The standard rooms are simple, wouldn't be hurt by a bit of fresh paint, but otherwise quite satisfactory. There is ensuite faciltites and a TV with lots of Aussie and Asian channels. There is a restaurant with decent meals too. What I liked best though was the very friendly staff. It also feels like a very safe place to stay. They do not have email, but I booked it through Ecotourism Melanesia via email for no extra charge.
