Indonesia/PNG border

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I'm in Jayapura at the moment and wondering where to get the exit stamp from Indonesia; here or at the border? I'll try here but will that force me to go by sea? Cheers. All the cheap hotels seem to be full and the room I finally got has amazing water damage. Quite a jumping place though (Jayapura). Also how careful do I have to be about malaria? Thanks for your attention.

Irian Jaya/West Papua has the highest incidence of malaria in Indonesia. There is serious risk everywhere, although risk is somewhat lower in the highlands. Jayapura is definitely a risk area. The mosquitoes haven't figured out the borders yet, so there is also serious risk in PNG, except above 1,800 m (<5,906 ft).

Your best bet would be to ask at the Immigrasi in town before heading to the border. Things change almost daily so you can never be sure. There's no need to travel by sea even if you do get the exit stamp in town.

Which hotel are you staying at? There should be some good competion now that there are a few new hotels opening up.

there is a pretty good and relativly new hotel just behind the mosque. I stayed there around the same time last year. It was the best option in town to get for a reasonable price.
I'd also go to Immigrasi and ask about the Situation. They're friendly and very helpful.
Enjoy Papua!
