Indonesia to Papua and back againCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Hi everyone, I am planning on travelling in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea in May and June next year. I will first fly to Bali and travelling around the islands there for four weeks. From Bali I will fly into Jayapura and from there I hope to cross the border into Vanimo. I will then fly back out from Jayapura approximately four weeks later. I am just wondering about the visas I will require for this trip and also how and can go about getting them? I am particularly concerned with the practicalities of going out of Indonesia and then going back in to it overland at a later date. Is it a multiple entry visa to Indonesia I will require and if so, can I get this in the UK rather than in Indonesia? And likewise can I get the visa required to enter PNG overland in the UK rather in Jayapura? What I would really love is an “idiots guide” to exactly what I will need to do re visas for this trip! Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Sam
There are no multiple entry tourist visas for Indonesia, you will have to get a new Indonesian visa in Vanimo (or Moresby). A PNG visa can be obtained in Jayapura, but experiences vary. Some people have reported having to wait for a full week to get one, and pay ca 1.5 million Rp for a business visa as the consulate wouldn't give them a tourist one! Okay then, I´ll try again. In February 2011 I could not get a visa for PNG in Jayapura although Lonely Planet then told me I could. So I had to go back to Jakarta to get it. To get it, they want to see an onward airticket. The cheapest one these days is one to Cairns in Australia with Air Niugini for 400 Kina. Once in PNG you may change this flight into a local one if you plan to go back to Indonesia on land. Before leaving Indonesia for PNG I had to get stamped out at the immigration office in Jayapura and therefor it´s better to have a visa for Indonesia from a diplomatic mission. I had only a visa on arrival, so I had to pay this guy at the immigration about 700,000 IDR to get stamped out. Then you have to leave the country the same day. It´s about 60 km to Wutung and it´s almost only possible to do this via taxi or at least an ojek if you can manage with your luggage. Still on the Indonesian side change some IDR into Kina at such a "supermarket", otherwise you can´t pay the PMV from Wutung to Vanimo. The way back is easy. In Vanimo I got the visa for Indonesia within one day and before noon it should be possible to find a PMV to Wutung in front of the "shoppingcenters" there every day except sundays. From Wutung to Jayapura it´s also possible by minibus or a combination with an ojek. Bon voyage! (P. s. I´ll do this again coming January) | 4
