Infomation on Kavieng

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has been to Kavieng (New Ireland) in the last year or so, I was working there in 1980-81 and then Goroka for a while. I was interseted in finding out how much it has changed over the years, I am thinking about a return visit at some stage, but i am worried that my memories of an idilic tropical hidaway have long since disapeared. When i was there we had all of about 3-5 tourist vist per year. i fear that it may just be a comercial tourist trap now.

It is still very quiet and friendly, a looooooooooooong way from being a tourist trap, don't worry.
But it surely gets more than 3-5 tourists/year!

I might also add that Kavieng is still unlikely to get more than 3-5 tourists/day.
If you think that's too touristy, think of the Gold Coast back in Queensland first...

I was in Kavieng 3 weeks ago, and it is definitely not a tourist trap (where in PNG is?). If you avoid the Nusa resort and the Malagan Beach Resort you will be unlikely to run into tourists. There are plenty of locals with dinghys who will be more than willing to take you to the islands at a fraction of the cost that either of the resorts would charge.

See my Trip Report above

I think you will still have a gtreat time in Kavieng.
