Itinerary advice

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

HI everyone,
I am planning on going to PNG for three weeks in August and have devised a bit of an itinerary that I would love some feedback on. I am a female in my 20s and I will be heading there alone, but plan on doing all activities with tour companies:

Day 1: Arrive Port Moresby (pick up by hotel)
Day 2- 8: Port Moresby to Mt Wilhelm for trek and Mt Hagen Festival (with company)
Day 9-11: Back to PM and boat to loloata island
Day 12 - 20: Kokoda ( with company)
Day 21: Back to Aus

I am a fairly experienced hiker, but I am getting mixed reports about the difficulty of these treks. If you think that one trek is enough, can anyone recommend one over the other?
It's a pretty jam packed itinerary but I'm not sure when I'll be back to PNG and i'd like to make the most of it!

Thanks heaps!

Hi Caitlin00, we operate a guesthouse at the base of Mt Wilhelm. We can arrange pick up and drop off at Mt Hagen Airport and Transfer to Mt Wilhelm. We can also arrange guides for the Mt Wilhelm Trek and the Mt Hagen Show. If you require any other information please contact us.

you should be fine - you have some time between - the kokoda is the longer one so doing that last is best

have a great trip

Thank very much! i just found out that Loloata Island will be closed for renovations so if anyone has any suggestions for a reasonably accessible diving/beach hang out close to Port Moresby or Mt Hagen please let me know !

Hi @Caitlin00 , you are going to love PNG! I was there in May and had an awesome time. I am an experienced hiker myself, but didn't manage to reach the Kokoda Trail, so am quite jealous!

Your itinerary looks great. The Kokoda Trek will be the toughest hike you do, but it will be fine as it sounds like you're an experienced hiker. From what I learnt in PNG, there are a few river crossings etc, so as long as you prepare well and kit some spare kit dry, you'll be fine :)

If you have to do one, do the Kokoda. The others will pale into insignificance once you're on the ground and chat to people in PNG.

Have a great time!

Simon
