Japanese Encephalitis

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

I cant seem to find any information on the Japanese Encephalitis virus in PNG.
Does anyone know of any cases of the virus anywhere in PNG lately?

The current recommendation of the Australian Health Department is that vaccination is recommended for "travellers intending to spend a month or more in Papua New Guinea, particularly if the travel is during the wet season."

This is based on a 2003 report that the virus, thought to be present only in the Western Province, has been found in the Port Moresby area. US CDC and others say that the virus probably occurs at low levels year round and that there are "sporadic local outbreaks."
