I posted recently about wanting to visit New Ireland and New Britain. Should we (this includes children) have the Japanese encephalitis vaccine if staying up to 5 days in each place (we would be staying at rural resorts)? I will also post this question in the medical forum. Thanks for any help or advice.

This could depend on the age of your children - it is a nasty vaccination. I'm not sure of the minimum age, but I discussed it with my paediatrican and she wouldn't consider it for young kids. It is also a very nasty disease though - if in doubt and your kids can have it, it is probably worth it. | 3
Hi there, As with most things prevention is better than cure and while in this case prevention can include the vaccination I think it's better to go with the time honoured mosquito net and tropical strength bushmans plus as well as cover up. Funnily enough we really didn't have too much of a problem with the mozzies and they usually eat me alive. So my advice would be no to vaccination and yes to all the other methods of prevention RELIGIOUSLY! Cheers, | 4
i am not sure of the current situation of jap e outbreaks in those 2 areas,as far as i know the areas are ok,and would not require the jap e vaccines,i had them for my recent trip into the highlands of west papua, where there is recent jap e outbreaks(mosquitos that bite pigs and then humans)very nasty, the shots are super strong and i doubt kids would cope with it,you should also get 3 shots over a small period of time(3 months)to get proper protection.p.s. they are expensive pricks!!!! | 5
