Japanese Encephalitis - is a vaccination needed?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Dear fellow travellers

Did you have a vaccination for Japanese Encephalitis when travelling around PNG?
I will be spending about 4 days at Sepik area, few at the Highlands and New Ireland/New Britain.

Thank you for recommendations!

Tom

i am not a doctor but i would recommend getting every possible vaccination ahead of visiting PNG

firstly the likelihood of being infected via dirt food water or vectors is high and secondly it is no place to be sick

we had the diptheria/tetanus/polio/petussis boost, typhoid, hapatitis AB, japanese encephalisis
(we have both had the MMR previously and have had chickenpox)

you also need to take something for malaria - we take malarone - expensive but worth it

there are many mosquito borne diseases in PNG which have no vaccine - ross river, zika, dengue etc and nameless others so use anti-mosquito spray, wear long trousers, long sleeves, limit time outside around dusk and sleep under nets

although rabies is present i dont think the shot is worth it - there are side effects and it only buys you time to get
to a hospital which would have to be port moresby - steer clear of dogs and bats - dont eat either (we have been offered both!)

since i am not a doctor there is good advice here
