Kakoda Trail

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi,

I want to walk the Kakoda trail and the tour operators that I have contacted all seem very expensive. Does anyone know what the cheapest I should expect to pay for a reliable operator is.

Any other Tips.

Do they all offer the same route and is there a "classic" route.

Many Thanks

Hi Pilko, 3 friends and myself are in the same boat.
We found the only affordable option is to organize our own trek from Owers Corner to Kokoda.

When do you plan to be there? I'm arriving in Port Moresby around the 25th June and will be looking for people to walk the track with. I don't mind paying for local guides but I don't want to pay a tour operator because most of the money won't stay in PNG.

Jon#3 - Not sure if your asking me or Pilko?? But we fly in on the 25th Aug leaving from Owers Corner a couple of days after that.
The fact the Tour Operators charge a tourist anywhere from $450 - $600 for a Porter is a little rough when the Porter and his family are lucky to see half of that money for his labors...

Hi - try

Max Kaso < mkaso_06@yahoo.com > - Max is a local man from the Kagi area (on the track) who is trying to make a go of Legend Guided Tours - a family business. I have used his services and found him to be very affordable. He was not knowledgable

IMPORTANT - Clarify what you want and the price before you commit to agreement. He's open to discussion.

Contact me if you have any queries. I could email him, if you wish, to say someone "may" contact him about a walk and to keep his prices realistic. yu yet!

Oops! Lost a bit in translation. "He is not knowledgable on the WWII history."

Thanks for the info Wanemya,

I have just emailed Max and was wondering what sort of price is reasonable for a guide to lead two people over 6-7 days who will carry their things and provide thier own food.

Kind Regards.
