Koke Village MummiesCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Hi, We are thinking about going to PNG in December. Ideal route would be Mt Hagen Sepik river, Raboul, Tufi, and ideally we'd like to see the Mummies in Koke Village. Does anybody know how to get there? is it worth it? Thanks
Hi flomojo77, Mummies is located between Sepik, Madang and part of Enga province. There is two ways of excess into the area. (1) You can fly by MAF Flight from Mt. Hagen to Mamuse. You need to book early in advance on the flight. The flights operates on schedule days but they are NOT flexible. It only operates on schedule day if there are more passengers booked. Otherwise you need to charter the flight on non schedule days. Second option is to trek to Mamuse (2 days): Fly into Mt. Hagen, overnight. Next day drive down to Baiyer river about (2hrs drive), ask the driver to drop you in Baiyer River Bird Sanctuary. Overnight at Tinsley Guest House, pick up some local guides there because they know the route to Mamuse. It takes 2 days trekking, overnight in village accommodation. Very important: The people in Mamusi and Miyamia are very primitive. They are hunters and gattherers, live in jungles and caves untill in late 1982, some Missioneries sported them while flying above. Note: When you land at Mamuse, ask for a Pastor who's name is Mr. Kaepa Pena. He resides in there as a pastor with his wife and entire family members. He usually guide tourists in that area as he can speak good english and translate the villagers with traditional local languages. Very unique place. You will experience more culture, traditional believes, and the highlight of your journey might be river cruise on a raft. Enjoy yourself. Leslie | 1
