Kokoda Trail

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hey,

Looking at doing the Kokoda trail next June/July and we are keen to do it as an independent group. Does anyone know if this is possible or have any contacts re: hiring a guide??

Any thoughts, experiences or tips would be appreciated!!

Thank you,
Nadia.

Hi Nadia,

My father and I walked the track on the 2nd of January this year with a guide organised by Narai Billy(koiaritreks@global.net.pg). Our guide was called Barry Bomar and he was fantastic. The total cost was about Aus$600 per person ex Port Moresby. The cost breakdown is included below. Good luck.

Guide - K100.00 per day x 7 day = K700.00
Food - K30.00 per day x 7 days = K210.00
Track Permit - K200.00 per trekker x 2 trekker = K400.00
village accommodation K20.00 per person x 2 trekkers x 6 days = K240.00
Transport K300.00 per trip to Owers Corner drop off = K300.00
Airfare- KKD/POM K250.00 per person x 3 people = K750.00
TOTAL COST = K2,550.00
10% Commission = K255.00
GRAND TOTAL = K2,805.00

Hi

I did Kododa a July 2008 and i simply rocked up to the kokoda trek authority and arranged my guide and porter through them. We shared a porter between the 3 of us + carried some of our own gear and food. We took our own food from Oz (ration packs) but you could do it more cost effective by getting pasta, noodles, oats and just tuna and stuff. As they boil water morning and night and lunch is normally at a camp along the way.

There was 3 of us doing the trek and the total cost that we split up between us was as follows:

Guide 80K * 9 =720K
Porter 70K * 9 = 630K
Food 200K * 2 = 400K
Car 500 k = 500K
Plane 150k * 2= 300K
Emerg Radio = 150K
Total = 2700K ( we split this 3 ways)

I couldnt speak more highly of them, they were fantastic and made our trip really memorable. Our guide had walked the track with all major trek companies for years and does treks on the side through recommendations and random people you go to the track authority. He plans to open his grow his own trek company in the future called "Kokoda Heroes Tracking".

His details are:

Clyde Guvera ( clyde) and Blasius Levi Susapu (blaze)

We saved loads by arranging it ourselves and not using any tour company and in return amongst other things, we gave alot of our gear to them to use for future treks. It felt more rewarding knowing 100% of our money was going into their pockets.

Any questions feel free to email me on

Cheers
Heidi
