Kokoda with Local Tour Company

My first post!

Four of us are heading to PNG for the month of May and are planning on hiking Kokoda. Originally planning to book a tour prior to going, we're hoping to keep the cost down - VERY down - and aren't seeing many inexpensive options.

I read a bunch of the comments - now a few years old - on other threads but haven't seen newer info. Do you have any advice about whether or not arriving in PoMo and arranging a trek with a local guide and porter is 'doable'? Any advice or guidelines on how your experience was & how much it cost? If you have any contacts, I'll take them as well ...

We are planning on bringing our own tents, our food, etc and are hoping to have a guide and two porters.

While I'm at it, if you have some "must see" places or general advice for the trip as a whole, I'm all ears!
