Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hi, I have been offered a job in the Markham Valley NW of Lae 100km. I have a young family and am seeking some info on that region in regards to safety, road conditions to and from lae, people, Ramu beef.

If anyone has any info in regards to any of the above i would appreciate the feedback

cheers bob

Hi Bob n Trace,
I don't know exactly where you are staying but I have passed through Lae a few times and have travelled up to the highlands. I'm no expert but thought I would kick off a reply to get the thread going for you. The main road has always been OK but once you turn off the roads deteriorate considerably. Lae city also has some dreadful roads. 4WDs are the go. Security is serious business in Lae and on the highways. Always take basic safety precautions like travelling during daylight, keeping doors locked and don't leave valuables in cars (even when locked). There are no taxis in Lae so you need transport as soon as you arrive. Once you get to the villages the atmosphere changes and the people are exceptionally friendly. There are a few options for mixing with locals and expats in Lae such as the yacht club.
The countryside out that way is really beautiful with towering mountains and huge rivers.

Best of luck.
