Madang snorkeling and homestay on nearby islands how to organize or find?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Hello, we are two backpacker and want also to stay 3-4 days in and around Madang mid September.
Can someone recommend a nice place to stay also good for snorkeling (budget)?
How can we find a homestay at one of the islands around Madang for 1-2 nights? We read it should be possible in the LP.
For all further good tips also PMV to Mount Wilhelm, safety would be nice to know.
Thanks all

For a nice village homestay with snorkelling near Madang contact Peter Siroi who runs Rempi Lagoon Beach Hut, a budget village stay right on the water just a short paddle to idyllic little islets where parts of the Pierce Brosnan movie Robinson Crusoe were filmed. It's all about 40 minutes by PMV west of Madang town, Peter will come to town to meet you and escort you to the village. The cost is PGK150 per person per night including village style meals for single occupancy and PGK100 per person per night for twin share. This includes use of the little white sandy beach and free swimming and snorkelling (BYO mask). There is a small charge for hiring local style outrigger paddle canoes and a small site fee for visiting the lagoon islands. Peter has no e-mail but you can send an SMS to his mobile phone 675 71701813 and he will get back to you next time he switches on his phone (no electricity in the village so he keeps his phone powered down to save battery. Peter can also take you on a fantastic rainforest hike along nearby Warwin Creek to a bat cave. This costs K50 per person entry fee (Peter will walk with you) and the money goes to his uncle who is the landowner and caretaker of the pristine Warwin Creek Rainforest - many times he has been courted by Asian logging companies to sign papers for logging the forest and become a rich man but instead he has refused to sign and opted to stay poor and protect the rainforest. I wish more tourists would do the Warwin Creek bat cave hike in order to support him.
My tour company has been using Peter Siroi's beach hut for budget tourist accommodation for several years - it's a very basic facility but clean and functional and Peter and his wife are obliging hosts. The village food is great - lots of seafood of course. Peter is a reliable local guide and tries to involve local village youths to help him host tourists where possible.
