Malaria in PNGCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
I will be travelling for about five days in PNG. I have been to Port Moresby before and anti-malarials weren't really necessary there. This time I will take some time off to go to New Britain, Kokopo and Rabaul. Will I need them there? If so my drug of choice is Malarone and I can get them easily where I live. Thanks in advance.
Your risk of malaria is substantially reduced if you are staying in tourist-grade accommodation with insect screens and air con. However, for a short stay I can't see any point in playing the odds. Malarone is well tolerated by most folk without any apparent side effects. Therefore, if I were you I would take Malarone. | 1
Thanks for your advice. Since my trip started before your post I had decided already to buy Malarone and take it just to be safe. I am already back home. My accommodations were tourist grade, Kokopo Beach Bungalows, but their best feature was the large platform bar area extending out toward the beach with great views of the volcano so if I couldn't hang out there in late afternoons because I was scared of being bitten that would have sucked. Btw, I noticed an almost complete lack of mosquitoes on New Britain. | 2
