money exchange

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

hello all
Is there a money exchange in either Port Moresby or Goroka airport?
I need a little to kick start the trip - like paying for my taxi.
Is AUD accepted in PNG?
All advice are appreciated.
Thanks
Boon

G'day Boon, there is an ATM in the airport at POM. You would have to go to the Bird of Paradise Hotel in Goroka to exchange (or to the bank if you want - I think ANZ has an ATM in Goroka also - but there is usually a long queue at the bank to get to a teller). I usually get some cash while still in Brisbane airport but not totally necessary. The larger Hotels might accept Aus dollar but you will lose in the exchange I would think - but you need the Kina to get around.

Just behind the immigration is a money changer because you already need 100 Kina for the visum. They keep your passport and you go and change the money. Then you go back, pay and get your passport.
The rates at the hotels are really not good. Change at banks like Westpac or Bank South Pacific BSP.
