Money in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Just some quick questions about money in PNG:

1) Cash for back-up: USD or AUD?

2) Traveler Checks: Still useful in PNG or will a ATM/debit/credit-card combo be sufficient?

Thanks and Best Regards,
-Marco

AUD

i dont think travellers checks would be much use in PNG (or increasingly anywhere)

changing cash for kina outside PNG gives a very poor rate - only get enough
for the visa on demand plus a bit extra - save queuing at arrivals and the arrivals atm
is often not working

ATMs at the Airport didn't work three weeks ago. So for there you should have some cash money with you - US$, A$ or EURO it doesn't matter. For the visa they take 60US$!
In the bigger towns you will find ATMs but only useful if you take bigger amounts. Usually it costs around 6.5-7 Kina for one withdrawal plus the money your own bank takes. On the other hand you get a better course than at the money changers. And you safe time in compare with changing money at banks.
