Most untouched areas of png ?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Heading to png with child dreams of staying for a bit with hunter gatherers in head.

Even if not doable, where should i be headed to get the closest experience ?

WIch city reachable by road is closest ?

Thx !
Antoine.

Depends what are your specific interests and what time you have to spend in PNG?. What do you really want to see, PNG is still big land mass and accessibility and infrastructure is a problem but if you have big time, there are remote locations that you can get in there and wait around to get the next schedule flight back or walk to catch the next flight back.
Again it depends on what you want to do, fly in or get drop off by vehicle and trek or walk to the nearest get on point etc.
There are many places to recommend unless you indicate your duration of stay or trip in PNG, we will know where to nominate a place for you.
Over to you then. Owen Lucas

Well, i should enter vanimo by road from west papua with a 60 days visa. From there i'm ready to head anywhere as long as it's reachable by road or flights up to 50 dollars one way

Then, i'm used to trekking in jungle and a 15 days trek doesn't scare me.
I'm used to trekking alone as long as the path is clear enough.
I usually ask in villages for a place to sleep and local food.

I'm looking for a village, a camp or a settlment of papuans living in and from the jungle, not used to seeing tourists.
The most interesting for me would be hunter-gatherers but slash'n'burn forest agriculture is fine also, as long as the people are as untouched as possible by our western world...

for experiencing traditional village life with some good scenery on a longer trek from wamena a trip to yali country could fit. I enjoyed it and there are some remoter villages (without air strip) in the area where you still can see quite a lot traditionally "dressed" men and women.

the best primary jungle scenery I've ever seen including birds of paradise was in the untouched hunstein range of PNG (just south of wagu lagoon in the upper sepik area). people in that area live a traditional life but they are 'westernized' in terms of dresscode

Hi

Where are those yali people located? I couldn’t find them?
What about the Mt. Bosavi area? I can catch an MAF flight there from Tari or Mt. Hagan.

I have a similar question. We are 2 experienced travellers, and we also want to get to untouched places, people that still dressed in traditional clothes, and live traditional lives.
I will go all over PNG in the next 2 month, so the exact place in PNG is not a problem. I’m also willing to pay for a flight to get there or to charter a 4 seater from MAF (willing go above the 50$ one way limit mentioned above :-).
Any good recommendations?

Thanks
Lior
