Mt Giluwe, Western HighlandsCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea
Has anyone climbed Mt Giluwe in the Western Highlands? It is the second highest mountain in PNG (4,367 metres). I know that I need to go to Hagen to start, but not sure which village to go after that and how many nights out it will take. I've previoulsy climbed Mt Wilhelm and Mt Albert-Edward, so am looking for my next challenge. Has anyone done this, and if you have, how did you go about it?
re:mt giluwe, the easiest trek to the east summit 4290 metres,is best approached from the old agriculture station 18kms sth west of a place called tambul, some pmvs pass this area from mendi or mt hagen.it is a 7 hour walk from the road to the summit,so you need to stay o'nite, before going back.local guides are available, this is a very cold area and weather conditions close in very quickly, early morning 6am gets you the best views before the mist and clouds close over.as it is a non tourist area,be careful of how much you are paying for guide, going rate p.p is 50kina per day, plus food.local villages can also provide a roof over your head.lukim yu. | 1
The 1st edition of LP's Bushwalking in PNG guide has detailed info on this climb, I believe. Surely it would be dated for practical info, but the route itself must still be quite similar. That edition is much more peak-bagging-oriented than the 2nd one, and might be a worthy investment for you. | 2
Good for you! | 3 | |
Laszlo, Thanks for the tip about the old PNG Bushwalking guides. I have been able to get them both via Amazon. Cheers, David | 4
