| man_from_oz11:50 UTC03 Sep 2008 | I am considering taking my inflatable kayak to somewhere in PNG preferably to where there is clear water, coral reefs, forested islands and friendly villagers, possibly the archipelago at the SE end of the country or to the archipelago at the northern end of Latangai Island. Has anyone been to either? Would you recommend them? I have kayaked in tropical countries so I know what to expect with currents, winds and dehydration but I have never been to PNG and there are a few more pressing questions that I hope someone can answer: 1. How often do flights leave for these far-flung places and is there anyway of finding out the schedule via the internet? What are the likely costs (I will not be doing a charter flight or boat trip)? 2. Is it easy to get a lift with locals in their boats if going the same direction? Are they pretty honest or will they consider you to be a cash cow and charge you whatever they think you will pay (like in some other countries). Also on the topic of locals, if I turn up to a village unannounced, what sort of reception could I expect? Also, will someone speak English? 3. Are there things I should be aware of such as crime (I heard the Port Moresby is dangerous), malaria, sharks and box jellyfish?
4. Are there any weather statistics out there on the internet, especially wind direction and speeds? Thanking you in advance

Forget getting online info. See the latest LP for sample fares.

Easy and they are pretty honest. Expect friendly reception in most places, though olf course this also depends on YOUR behaviour! English-speakers are almost everywhere in PNG.

Crime in the few cities, mostly by night. Malaria everywhere - take pills!

Search! I never bothered.
