Hi all My girlfriend and I are thinking about going to Papua New Guinea for three or four weeks from late December onwards. Basically we're just trying determine the following: We don't want to follow the rest of the tourists but we also don't want to make things too hard for ourselves. We know Port Moresby is dangerous but we're trying to understand how risky or difficult is travel through the rest of the country. We prefer independent travel but is PNG a place where you really have to join a tour group to get around within a limited timeframe? Many thanks, Craig
I think your best bet is to read through a guide book before you go to form a route & a plan of where you want to visit. There are WWII wrecks all over PNG - I imagine you will be going to Rabaul in East New Britain & you can dive a few there - the trouble is there is poor vis in the harbour which is where most of them are. So I would suggest you have a go at George's Wreck outside the harbour & the Kokopo Zero which will have better vis. There are 2 terrific wrecks out of Port Moresby - they're artificial reefs but the vis is good & they're both upright & worth it. The other wrecks - Madang - there's a B25 plane - there are other wrecks up the north coast road but they're difficult to get to - you need a charter trip - too long & expensive & irregular. Kavieng in New Ireland has 2 planes - a shallow Zero - vis is hit & miss - & a crumpled inverted Jap bi plane - good vis but it's 40m so you won't have log on it. There's also a couple of WWII premier wrecks from Tufi - B17 & the S'Jacob - both charter dives & I think they'll be out of season when you go. | 1
Try this on Rabaul http://www.hesawyer.com/rabaul.html You'll also find stuff on Port Moresby diving & Tufi on this site | 2
