Overstaying PNG Visa penalty

What happens in PNG if you overstay a 60 day tourist visa? I heard there are severe penalties?
I was considering it as my planned stay is about 70 days and extending the visa seems to be quite a hassle.
Any input or experience with this is welcomed. I am a seasoned traveler, at least to some extent.
