Papau New Guinea Festival

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

Dear fellow travelers,

Would love some advice on PNG:

  1. Which festival is the best? The one at Goroka or at Mt. Hagen.

  2. Can I travel fairly easily on my own from PM to Goroka and Mt. Hagen.

  3. Any other nearby areas e.g. villages and wildlife that is recommended?

Overall the question is, can I travel independently to Goroka and Mt. Hagen (and nearby areas) without a guide.

If I should get a guide for other recommended places, should I book a guide in advance or just ask around town in PNG? Who to trust?

Thanks!

Hi

  1. Which festival is the best? The one at Goroka or at Mt. Hagen.
Goroka is known to be the most colorful show on earth. Check out their website http://www.skerah.com/article.php?id=49

It's up to you but Goroka seems to have the edge because there are a thousand tribes in full color wanting to take center stage.

  2. Can I travel fairly easily on my own from PM to Goroka and Mt. Hagen.
Air Niugini (and maybe Airlines PNG) can take you there. you can only fly.

  3. Any other nearby areas e.g. villages and wildlife that is recommended?
If you're in Port Moresby, there are a number of villages. In Goroka, depending on where you are staying ask the hotel.

I think you would need a guide. You can do it alone but strongly recommend you get a guide.

If you are just going to the festival, you can go alone. I went with a guide in '09, will be going again this year and will be going on my own. You can hire a ride from Madang to Mt Hagen - but the only wise way to go is to fly as skerah states.

You cannot just show up and expect to get an air ticket or hotel around Mt hagen festival dates. Get them by May is my advice. Contact WWF in PM for hotel recommendation
