Papua New Guinea Bargam Cultural Show

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

A tour company is offering a tour involving a visit to the BARGAM Cultural Show in September 2008.

Has anyone done this show? Is it similar to the Mt Hagen show?

Bargam is a language spoken by a tribe near Madang. I have not heard of the Bargam Show, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Many towns and villages have their own shows, but there would not be on the scale of the Hagen or Goroka shows. I would be very cautious about booking a trip to this show until the location and details were very clear.

My advice would be that if you are coming form the US, play it safe and go to either the Hagen or Goroka Shows were you are assured of a great experience.

The Bargam Show is mainly an agriculture show in a rural area of Madang. It is a local event and also attracts singsing groups, school groups etc to perform. If you attend you will probably be the only tourists there, which is the beauty of it. It's not a tourist show like the Mt Hagen Show and Goroka Show, it's a bona fide local festival. You can get more information from the Madang Visitors Bureau website www.madangtourism.com
