PNG and papua plus East and West TImor

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

We are going to Australia and over to Port Moresby in PNG, then over to Papua and from there we are tryng to find out a way to go to Timor, either east or west. Two questions: Are these places ok fo rtravelling. We are a not so young couplle but used to travel. Reading a lot of warnings though. Anyone know a way to get from Papua to Timor? Thanks from Oslo

All places are OK for travel, with PNG being the only place with security concerns (just the general city crime, basically). And maybe East Timor, depending on actual political issues when you are there.
There is a Pelni ship, the Bukit Siguntang, that connects some obscure ports in West Papua with Kupang in West Timor. That is the only direct link, so chances are you will not catch it, in which case you should go via Sulawesi or Java, both of which are connected to Jayapura by daily flights and at least weekly ships.
From there, you can find both ships and flights to Kupang.

Best way would be to fly Jayapura to Denpasar then on to Dilli or Kupang. Garuda fly from Jayapura to Denpasar daily and Merpati fly between Denpasar & Timor.

I am sure there are other airlines also flying between Bali & Timor as well.
