PNG by bicycle

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Papua New Guinea

hello,

I will be in PNG in a few days and I hope I can get my bicycle in the country and do some travel with it. Do you have any advise on which roads are advisable or not, safe, beautiful, etc.? I would like to keep my bicycle for as long as possible, but being realistic, it may be a good idea to get rid of it.

How about the island provinces? New Britain and Bouganville seem to have a lot to offer, but maybe the roads are just impassable.

Thanks a lot

Indeed, the island provinces are your best bet, notably the one you failed to mention: New Ireland!

The Highlands Highway is beautiful, but could be tough, and safety is more of an issue there.

Hi Laszlo,

I have the same feeling about the islands. I will give a try to New Ireland also (and I hope that it has somewhat of the real Ireland about it! ;-)). The Highlands sound also terrific, so I might just put the bike on the bus if I do that. Safety in PNG is a big concern and I don't want to low the guard after the relaxing SE Asia. I appreciate your bringing this up. Thanks a lot.

ASFAIK, "bus" is a rarity in the Highlands! ;-)

But those PMVs that are trucks would almost certaily take a bike.

The smaller vehicles unlikely.

THere is a road, a dirt road of course through Bouganville. There use to be on of biggest copper mine in the world so there was a transport as well. I have seen only a part of this road and it was in a very good condition.
Accomodation might be the issue. About safey -I guess it is the same issue like everywhere else. While we sailed and stopped all the way along Bouganville locals were very friendly though.
