PNG holiday

I am looking at spending a few days in New Ireland and in New Britain. I am looking for accommodation that is quiet and safe for a woman travelling alone. Rapopo or Hamamas in New Britain are of interest. In New Ireland: Lissenung, Nusa or the Tree Hosue. Any suggestions? Thanks

Any of the New Ireland places would be nice, but I would warn against staying at the Hamamas Hotel (whatever its new name), as the dust from the volcano is VERY unpleasant in that area!

Hi there,
Got back from New Ireland about two weeks ago. Check out the trip report I posted if you like. In terms of accomadation I highly reccomend Nusa Retreat. Hosts are great, food is great, diving is easy to organise (if thats your thing) and there are other activities otherwise.
Lissenung is a bit further away and harder to get out and explore New Ireland. The tree house is a bit more isolated down the road and from what I heard from other people while I was there relativly expensive for what you get (i.e. quite run down).

Any questions just let me know.

Jon

Hey there

Lissenung is an island you can walk round in 15 minutes flat - there's a daily boat that goes to the market in town - or there used to be. Amazing sunsets.

I stayed there to dive in 02

As for Rapopo I was there when it was being refurbished - I take it you've found their web site? I stayed with Brian & Bev who run it when they had the Kaivuna in Rabaul - & they are great people. I will be staying with them in 09 when I return to NB. Their chicken in a basket is wonderful.

Laszlo - I see the local Gov in NB wants everyone out of Rabaul because of the dust, although they say the pollution from the dust in the air compares quite well with Bejing & they've just had the Olympics there.

OP - Rabaul is definitely worth a visit - if just to see what a volcano can do. Cannot wait to go back.

Yip, Rabaul, especially the devastated area around the Hamamas Hotel is definitely worth visiting, but hell, it is no place to stay unless you are a masochist!
